About us

A beautiful country pub set at the foot of the South Downs and Devil's Dyke

the royal oak STORY

a tale as old as time…

There has been a Royal Oak on this site in Poynings since the 1880’s, a beautiful country pub set at the foot of the South Downs and Devil's Dyke. A perfect location for a country walk, family dining, or a cold relaxing drink in our large picturesque garden.

Having undergone extensive refurbishment during the recent lockdown period, the pub now benefits from a much-improved bar and dining area, an upgraded kitchen and external barbeque area. Plus the addition of a new boot wash and external hand wash station. Finally, not forgetting our large car park, with plenty of space for over 30 cars and our newly installed electric charging points.

Our focus is on serving really tasty food, good old pub classics mixed in with some interesting specials. All ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible and our chef takes real pride in sourcing the finest sometimes very unusual ingredients.

Whether you are joining us for Sunday lunch after a long walk, a family gathering or to celebrate a special occasion, our team will make sure your visit is one to remember for the right reasons.

Everyone is welcome at The Royal Oak, Poynings - young, old and furry friends - we are child-friendly, dog friendly with a large pub garden and pirate ship for the summer days and a roaring log fires in the winter months.

We look forward to meeting you!
